The hope of positivism was that things would turn out more like physics. The common place is that that falls down around the time of Thomas Kuhn, who doesn't really directly attack it, but attacks its kind of auxiliaries. It's an implicit, if not explicit assumption that the experimental way to do science is the right and only way and everything else should not be regarded as science.
