The records make it clear that it was the clergy who were william's most enthusiastic and supportive collaborators. Some of william's earliest writs in england were focused on granting or confirming lands to the english clergy. But the clergy weren't the only turncoats. There were plenty of nobles who sought to profi from collaboration as well. And so what began with a trickle soon turned into a flood of alits, all presenting selves to the normans thinking they could turn this whole thing to their advantage by switching sides.
