The sound of the studios was a real 1970s studio. Walls were covered in thick carpet, shag pile carpet and there was no reflective surfaces. So it sounded like you were recording a vacuum with no ambience at all. It didn't sound how we wanted Joy Division to sound. Peter Hawk might have been heartbroken, but when Unknown Pleasures was released in the summer of 1979, it was met with incredible reviews.
