I think too often we haven't considered just how difficult our history has been. I'm the great grandson of enslaved people because rather than being diminished by that fact, I realized that it was a source of my power. I had coursing through my body the lineage of people who had fought and endured slavery and oppression. We're not actually appreciating what those eras represent. Even in this current political climate, when people start talking about make America great again, I really want to know what decade we're talking about.
