The History of the United Kingdom - The Interregnum

No living person has ever known a united kingdom without a monarch. King charles the first had been on the throne since 16 25. What this meant in practical terms was that he was the king of the kingdom of england, scotland and ireland. And to decide that it didn't just want to get rid of the king, it publicly executed him. It is quite a complicated period in british history - so i will try to stick to the most important parts.
