How to Use iPadOS 17 to Lock and Unlock Your iPad
In iPadOS 17, there are new automation triggers. When my iPad disconnects from an external display, open the settings app and take me to the specific page of display and brightness. So all you need to do is flip the toggle and you will enable the lock and unlock behavior again. This is a silly method and it shouldn't be like this, but it works.
