The Value of a Defensive Player

In 2008, Tim Duncan was ranked seventh in the league for defensive value. In 2017, Kawhi Leonard and Zaza Pachulia are considered better offensive players. Is it true that a defense sometimes doesn't even really matter at all? It's nice to have defensive value but if you can get buckets and lead an offense to a championship, that's all that matters.
