How to Start Your Patient on a Low Phosphorus Diet
Phosphorus levels get very high if you don't address them with some other technology besides just dialysis. You can't just use the filtration of dialysis to clear out the phosphorus load. So we tell people to go on a low phosphorus diet. We want them to be about 800 milligrams of phosphorus a day. And then we add phosphorus binders, which are just medications that bind up the phosphorus in the diet so it doesn't get absorbed by the body.
