The Toxic Algae Blooms of Lake Erie
Today's algae blooms are more likely to be toxic than the stuff plaguing Lake Erie in the 1960s. These algae blooms can kick off aerosolized poisons. There was nowhere to cool off along Mississippi's coast today. A toxic algae bloom forced all 21 of the state's Gulf Coast beaches to close to swimmers. People are also being told not to eat fish caught in the area.
