The May Games in the Renaissance
The may games served as a pretext or rational for the poor of the town to steal money from the rich, gentry elite. One important development was the adoption of specific characters or personas for the may king and queen. So rather than just saying we've chosen a young, handsome, virile man to be the may king, they would instead specifically say he is robin hood. The may queen usually was dentified as maid marian, which is a sort of woman of the woods in french folklore.
