Why Hasn't There Been More Progress in Philosophy?

There's probably a selection effect to take surveys on questions where there's no consensus. A lot of the time when there's a consensus, it'll be fairly obvious and therefore not worth taking a survey about. It might have helped David on his tenure case to have such a highly cited paper but I doubt that many people were even then. People do make sociological assumptions about what philosophers believe in writing their philosophy papers all the time. And so having better information about that should allow you to write to do better philosophy.
