The Origins of the Oxford English Dictionary

The New English Dictionary was intended to be the biggest, most thorough collection of English words yet. James Murray ended up being the Oxford English Dictionary's editor for 40 years and was also its greatest and most famous editor. The project started in 1857 with three members of London's Philological Society who saw some serious deficiencies in dictionaries that had been published so far.
