Stuff You Missed in History Class

CHAPTER

The Akron and the USS Macon

Wiley was commanding officer aboard the Akron sister ship when it went down in a storm off the California coast just a year later. While portions of the Akron were salvaged from the sea weeks after its sank, in 2002, additional debris was explored by the Navy. The Akron's pennant is now part of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum's collection. In 2014, a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation to the University of Akron's archival services enabled the library division to preserve several films that are referenced in this episode.
