How Much Should I Know About Compilers?

i was reading about a compilers the other day. Can somebody explain it to me? Wrigte, what compilers are? I'm assuming that emmel engineers typically are the ones who should know about those. Toa, just reading out the definition strictly from wicapeta here. And then if anybody has insight, let me know.
