The victim worked as an insurance radar for the Pacific Bell telephone company. She had recently lost her mother and father, a retired US Army servicemen. The attacker was taunting her with hang-up calls for two weeks following the attack. He cloned the back fence from another house to gain access to the yard. Police assumed this was a targeted, isolated incident. A well planned and thought out attack by a young opportunist offender. It would be 10 years before DNA analysis would be used on crime scenes. Even at that point in the mid-70s, forensic evidence was valued at crime labs.
