The ATF's Role in the Clinton Government

As Al Gore came into power as vice president, he was running on reinventing government. One of the tenants of it was to move ATF from Treasury over to Justice Department or maybe just get rid of it altogether and let the FBI handle that stuff. So even if they got to keep their agency, they were now going to be way under the thumb of the FBI over at Justice instead of having the degree of independence that they had at Treasury. This was an absolute red alert crisis to them to protect themselves.
