Andrew conway morris is an intensive care doctor specializing in sepsis at the university of cambridge. You can get psis from bacteria, you can get sepsis from viruses and so really across the range. The key thing with sepsis is that that response is not localized to a specific area, but rather spills out into the rest of the body. There is almost certainly an interaction there between the bacteria and the host's immune system.
