The History of Memorials in Turkey

The problem with state generated memorials is that they are addressing a particular time in an agenda of the state at that moment. A memorial created for one cause be coopted by another. And these things made of stone and brass and wood can become political symbols, destinations, focal points for protest and dissent. In the second half of the programme, we'll travel further into the twentieth century, into a landscape of memorials and memories of war and of mass murder.
