Tribes of American Foreign Policy

This chapter examines four distinct perspectives within American foreign policy debates, namely America First Hawks, proponents of liberal primacy, progressive world builders, and realist restrainers. It highlights the tension between these views, particularly during the Trump administration, and emphasizes a realist internationalism approach that prioritizes U.S. interests while managing relationships with emerging global powers like China and India. Additionally, the chapter critiques the Biden administration's inconsistent strategies in responding to global challenges, focusing on the limits of democracy promotion and human rights advocacy.
