Three Things You Don't Check Your Sources Well

Academics have little incentive to actually check their sources well. So you get a lot of things in the academic literature, which you just not through. And if they're really exciting and interesting, they get popularized. There's a claim by Rachel Mines that Victorian possessions regularly use vibrators to treat their female patients with hysteria. No evidence has occurred, but it's a widely held belief. Another one is Eskimos have lots and lots of words for snow. Every anthropology department will probably tell you this in an introduction to anthropology course. Because it's exciting.
