The History of Venice
Venice had worked with the Ottomans to monopolize the spice trade. The discovery of the Americas brought new products into European markets that Venice had absolutely no pardon for. In 1797, the Republic of Venice came to an end when it was invaded by the French under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte. While Venice lost its strategic and economic importance, it was still a historic and beautiful city. Unlike many cities in Europe, it managed to escape the Second World War without any damage.
