The Origins of Norman Land Holding

The way William did this was to create a number of mega-rich Barons. In general these men were simply given the land holdings of existing Anglo-Saxon Thanes. The rest of it was split between Norman Barons, the Church, and land that William held in his own hands as the King's the mainland.
