I worry sometimes we spend too much time talking about the middle and not enough about the bottom quintile and quartile. We can make life much, much better for people at the lowest end of the income distribution. I agree that the earned income tax credit is an interesting instrument because it is targeted. On a previous episode, i think i've argued in favor of raising the federal minimum wage. The thing about extreme poverty is it is a myth that there's nothing we can do about it. In fact, we've demonstrated that we can make the situation better.
