During the Great Depression, millions of poor farmers from Northern Texas, Oklahoma in particular, and Arkansas headed westward. They were fundamentalist Christians that were not like we episkopalian's Presbyterians, Methodists, except for a calf. And more importantly, they were imbued with the New Deal mentality. As these people began to intermarry, assimilate, enter the upward mobility trajectory, they became more conservative.
