The Great Dismal Swamp Landscape Study

The dismal swamp has been over the last hundred years or so drained to some extent, but originally I mean the dismal swamp was 2000 square miles of territory. It goes about 50 miles inland from the Atlantic and straddles the North Carolina Virginia border. There were centuries that slave labor camps were posted around the swamp for a while if you were the right kind of person who might be invited into the swamp. You didn't just show up in the swamp; there were hidden paths that you had to know how to get to the swamp. And it was really an eye opening experience when you encounter bears and snakes and those all became your greatest protector once you're inside the swamp.
