The Epicureans were posed with a problem, which is they value everything in terms of like the pleasures or pains that it's going to create. They did have a rather implausible idea that Cicero talks about where the wise make an agreement to be friends with each other. So I think it's more likely that you indulge in certain pleasant things with people and then you come to associate that with them.
