The Origin of the Zigarate in Mesopotamia

The zigarat was the defining building of sumerian temple sites that were built to worship the sumerian deities. Zigarates are reasonably easy to distinguish, as they appear to be built in layers of decreasing size the higher you go. It is difficult to be completely specific about how these zigarats were used, or exactly who had access to them.
