i think a good place to start is oftentimes the beginning of the cold war. Russia has always, historically, been torn between east and west. It doesn't fall easily into either category of the urasian continent. But i think that it could have easily oriented, or more easily oriented, westward. And we went from yelzin, who was always a fragile leader, to putin. We went from a fragile leader who needed his hand holding  to a much more single minded leaderwho absolutely didn't want his hand held.
