The moon was in a waning crescent phase and only had about nine percent of its surface illuminated. The captain sent out a distress signal at that point. At this point, the passengers felt a rumble throughout the ship but no one is worried. People were up on the deck kicking around some of the ice that had shown up on the top of the deck.
