The equites had the privilege of sitting in the first 14 rows of the theatre. They were also given a tunic with a narrow purple stripe. The idea was that they weren't supposed to act, dance or fight as a gladiator. But sometimes they had to when they fell on hard times - such as during tiberius' reign.
