The Government's New Immigration Bill Is Trying to Do What the Rwanda Scheme Before It Tried to Do

At its heart, it's trying to do what the Rwanda scheme before it tried to do. But this new legislation tries to do it in a few different ways. It also gives the power to the government to detain those people for as long as the home secretary considers there to be a quote reasonable prospect of removal. This builds on the government's past approach, which has tended to re-admit people into the asylum system if they can't remove them in six months. The bill does not bring with it new capacity for removals to other countries or returns agreements.
