Dominicans and franciscans were european wide orders, answerable alone to the pope. The inquisitors drafted elaborate manuals or handbooks that others would follow. Often trained in canaan law, observance of the proper legal procedure was key in order to separate the wheat from the chaff. In his handbook, bernard of gile set out his mission clearly: 'The end of the office of the inquisition is the destruction of heresy'
