The Three Elements of Star Wars
The way I think about plot, especially in the beginning of the book, is that I have to know what three key elements are. The Hollywood formula says that the first third is often where the character is only acting because he's forced to. And for Star Wars, a lot of people point out the moment where they go in to get Princess Leia rather than doing the tractor beam and things like that. At that moment, then they make a decision. We're going to go and save her. Oftentimes, this is later than the first third, but that's kind of one way to think about it. That changes the story from the kid who's been forced away from his family
