The Battle of Leyte
Halsey's powerful third fleet had just fought a major battle off of Formosa with the Japanese land-based air force. Halsey sends away two of his four carrier task groups, one is recalled in time to fight this battle on 24 October. The Americans had no idea what the framework of the Japanese plan was. When the invasion started, there was no apparent Japanese reaction because they were slow to react. At that point, the battle was decided.
