The Importance of Respect in Negotiations
Sally Kohn: Sometimes we are afraid of going into these difficult conversations, whether it's a salary negotiation or a crucial conversation you have to have with a colleague. The fear is, if I know the truth, then am I still who I perceive myself to be? She says people get hung up on total compensation but there are all kinds of other areas in compensation where they can find additional compensation. "I really try to encourage folks if you're feeling like the respect is there, but you can't move the needle on salary," she says.
