Our understanding of whale populations is limited by our methods. They largely live out of sight and for scientists who rely on visual methods we can do a lot but we can only have so many boats and binoculars on the water. In order to understand how these whales live and where they live, which is the key to being able to protect them, we need both the individual level perspective that we can get from technologies such as hydrophones. And it's not just listening to the sound but getting the direction as well, like a pair of ears.
