The Fire in the Ash Building

In March of 1911, a fire in the Ash building that's A-S-C-H in Manhattan killed 146 people. Pauline Pepe was one of the survivors: "We all tumbled one right after another and I saw people throwing themselves from the window" The exit door was locked, the fire escapes collapsed and most of them were young women.
