The Existential Threat to Bitcoin's Slow Verification
The mining process is critically dependent on the verification of blocks being very, very much smaller than inter-blocked arrival time. If it takes a long time to verify blocks compared to how fast blocks come through, then you can shut everyone out by just creating blocks that they have taken so long to verify. SegWit fixes a quadratic hash thing, and it gives us a way to soft work in a block size increase.
