The break up of the soviet union was enormous crity for what i would describe as the bregne generation. During those bresenof years, many, many russians achieved a standard of living that their parents could never have dreamed of. The economy probably was about to implode in the early eighties but they were saved by the various oil shocks of the late seventies. They had satellite countries all over africa and felt this was how socialism should work. Then, of course, they make probably the fatal error of judgment in afghanistan. And when you look back on it now, there is an enormous nastalsia because after it was total rupture
