The End of the Gold Rush
Even some of gold country's most influential citizens faced a turn of fortune. Sam Brannon lost everything He invested heavily in Napa Valley real estate, building a resort and winery but never recouped his costs The man credited with first discovering California gold didn't fare much better. James Marshall spent the last years of his life unsuccessfully trying to win recognition as the man who'd started the gold rush But he died in 1885, almost penniless For everyone else, it was the beginning of the end of the gold rush.
