Should Companies Have to Pay to Link to Things?
The online news act, also known as C18, was passed in Canada last month. It essentially means that tech companies will need to pay news organizations every time there is a link to one of their stories on the internet. The bill strikes me as very problematic because it's extremely difficult not only to put into practice, but also just flies in the face of the fundamental sort of openness on which the web is based.
