List was also overcome with worry that his children were, quote, slipping off the path of righteousness. Authorities would later say he essentially stole $200,000 from his mother - or nearly $1.5 million in today money. By the fall of 1971, List was months behind on payments and received a letter from the bank letting him know they'd foreclose on his giant house if he didn't pay up right quick.
