The Progressive Era of Reform
In the mid 1970s I think in retrospect is there was a real progressive era of reform that nobody has kind of picked up on. It started because of disclosures about law enforcement and intelligence both the FBI and the CIA. The stories began to reveal the extent of the FBI's operations against anti-war dissidents before Watergate happened. In 1974 Said Hirsch who was an investigative reporter for the New York Times was and was investigating Watergate and then he broke away to investigate the CIA and its abuses during the Vietnam War. He wrote "The Biggest Story of His Career" which became one of his most famous articles.
