The Imperial Bureaucracy

The imperial bureaucracy was of course centred on Constantinople. The major offices underneath the Praetorian prefectures and master of offices were the financial departments. Large tracts of imperial land were managed by senators, who became curators of the estates in exchange for a salary. These positions were highly sought after because of the tax breaks and opportunities for enrichment.
