A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

A Christmas Carol was first published in 1843 by Chapman and Hall with John Leach as the illustrator. Dickens had to pay for the publishing costs himself asking only for a percentage of the revenue because of the flop of Martin Chuzzlewit which was his most recent story. At this time 1843 Charles Dickens is 31 years old. He would go on to have 10 children with his wife Catherine. His income was being threatened and so he felt a pressing urge to write a Christmas Carol as swiftly as possible. Now after a Christmas Carol we have stories like Donbie and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, great expectations and many more.
