White radical groups that came out of the universities were insecure about their privileged origins, and they really needed to borrow legitimacy from oppressed groups. Rejection by working class whites was something they could deal with. Most of these people hadn't spent much time around actual working class people ever in their lives. When black panthers got into bloody shoot outs with the police, you know, these white working class americans tended to support the police. After all, these were the people who voted nixon into office, right? They were the cops patrolling black neighborhoods and guarding southern jails. America couldn't be notsy germany without obedient, notsy germans.
