The Verb to Rise

To rise can mean to move upward or ascend. The sun rises every single day, so keep that example in your mind. Rise also means to increase in quantity, degree, or level. We could say there has been a rise in prices and here's one that you might be familiar with, a pay rise. Notice how it's not a pay raise. It's pay rise. Now, pay rise is the British way of saying it. I'm going to tell you about the American way to say it in a minute. So this, I think, is about what you were getting at when you use the two things together. They both mean the same thing but they have different meanings.
