MacGardo asked to meet with the editor of a local paper. The editor said he would send him on some mission for the paper. MacGardo was interested in Professor Challenger, who had broken Blondell's skull. He suggested that Mr. Malone should try his luck at being friendly with Prof. Challenger. After an exchange of letters and notes, they were able to work out a deal.
