A Wild Sheep Chases is a really great first Murakami novel. I think you need to get through about 100-150 pages before it starts to become an easier read. Underground probably comes closest to his fiction in terms of its effectI think. It shows individuals struggling in a postmodern world looking for some kind of connection and suffering random violence.
