There is no reliable count as to how many women were killed by the malicious in basra during those years. When researching this story with an irachi colleague, one woman after another told us that she was still too frightened to speak about those dark days. In two thousand and eight the irachi government sent troops into basra in a massive show of force to take the city back from the grip of militias. The security situation did gradually improve, and there was more religious tolerance. Dema now writes a blog and campaigns for women's rights. She says being a woman in pasra is still not easy.
